TL:DR, learning Sketchup is BAD because it is completely different then FreeCad, and the easiness of Sketchup will trap you in a severely limited environment. Going from Sketchup to FreeCad is quite the learning curb, but once you're up over the edge, it has a lot more potential. ![]() He is now at the point with FreeCad where he can blast out a part with little effort. At the time, I was still using Sketchup for quick simple stuff because I am still more familiar with it. I sold my first printer to a buddy a few months back, and I forbid him from using Sketchup even once. There is a lot more tools, the files are stored locally (and not in the cloud where it's extra steps to sort, move, and manage my collection), and it is just all round better for 3d printing. The benefits of FreeCad over Sketchup are HUGE. So, I bit the bullet and am re-learning how to CAD with FreeCad. ![]() That's not even close to being reasonable from my point of view. ![]() All I wanted to do was chamfer an edge, and do a boolean subtraction, but that was locked in the paid portion.Īt this point in life, I'm not averse to paying for software that I need, but the first paid tier of Sketchup is $120/year. With the modern prevalence of 3d printing, I really feel that the new owners of sketchup dropped the ball big time. It filled my need to draw and design stuff without having to go through the hassle of pirating software. I had just had some training in AutoCad, and was looking for something to use at home. I've been using Sketchup since Google first announced it. ![]()
